We've all had that neighbor, the one house on the block that everyone is suspicious of because weird things are always happening. You hear strange noises and nobody seems to come out of the house and tales of them being murderers begin. That's what this film brilliantly plays on; that your creepy neighbor may be a killer, but it tells it from a very playful childish view, giving the story a very over the top tone. It also applies visually, as all of the colors are coordinated and bright, color lights that don't make sense but look cool comimg from underneath or behind objects. Joe Dante always knows how to properly light a scene to make it look beautiful and very classic, like very dramatic stageplay presence and they always make sense in the context of his films. The cast are some very big '80s names who bring exactly what you'd expect from them, but they all bring their own brand of comedy, whether it's Bruce Dern's paranoid 'Nam vet, Corey Feldman's stoner teen or Rick Ducommun's bumbling baffoon, they all compliment each other and make this a script come to life. Tom Hanks, being the voice of reason, wonderfully points out that they are the crazy ones, not the weird neighbors. After all, they break into the house, spy on them and poke their noses into their business when all they want is to be left alone. Of course in the best twist ending that you saw coming, but you didn't, confirms what you thought all along, but they still acted like assholes. I haven't seen this since the '90s and even though I still found it to be funny, I could definitely see the faults in it. Dan Aykroyd plays a nerdy college teacher who takes on the persona of a pimp to help out the hoes when their former pimp bails to avoid debt from the big mob boss, Mom. For starters, he seems so reserved as the professor, but immediately gets into the Doctor Detroit persona with no fear and the life that it comes with. He has a bit of dialogue about how he likes it, but it's one, short piece of dialogue so this daredevil type of no fear seemingly comes out of nowhere. The Doctor himself is like a rejected SNL character, but he's so goofy and likable, I wish he had more screen time. I do feel like his transformation into tje Doctor would have made more sense if he had split personality disorder or some type of mental issue, plus tje movie could have had more gags with it. All the other characters are enjoyable too and for deceiving Dan Aykroyd at first, they become quick friends with almost no arch, but whatever. Most of the movie is him dealing with leading a double life and although he says he's tired, I didn't buy it. This leads to the gags in the movie, like constantly and seemingly bumbling his relationship with the school's funder, who may have been raped by bikers that he's totally forgiving about. The film portrays prostitution in a more positive light as all the pimps and hoes get along great and look clean and like super models and at the end, the community is totally excepting of them. The film is rated R, which they don't take advantage of. If it weren't for a couple instances of the word fuck, nothing about it is R rated and this is a movie about pimps and hookers.
