This is another one of those movies that's I seem to forget about no matter how many times I watch it. Not forget about the whole thing, just some parts of it and usually when I rewatch it I understand why. For starters, I can't really tell most of the characters apart. They are all pretty much unlikeable douchebags and there's no specific character traits to make them stand out with the exception of Alfred who is nerdy and kind of creepy. And then of course there is Virginia, arguably the protagonist of the movie, but we could say the main focus is on her and the unraveling of her tragedy which is actually pretty cool. Unfortunately with that, it feels like there was a lot of Studio meddling, especially the ending, and what you get is a movie with too many red herrings and some pretty weak kills for a slasher movie. The last Act of the movie really feels like it was shoehorned in and tries to tie everything together, but it feels rushed and takes a lot of coincidence. Still, I enjoy the movie from time to time and I would probably enjoy it more if it weren't so damn long. This is nearly a 2 hour movie and that's pretty ambitious for an early 80s slasher film. it's like they just wanted to drag the twist ending out and unfortunately for me it wasn't very effective. I used to rent this movie all the time when I was in high school and every member thinking that it was funny and gory. I haven't seen it in about 20 years so it was nice to go back and revisited with such a nice clean restoration, however my opinion on it has changed a bit. Some parts of it are funny, but for the most part the film confuses shouting with humor. At least 1/3 of this movie is the characters just shouting at each other and it was triggering my anxiety. aside from that, I couldn't find anything that was supposed to be humor in the movie, except for the doctor character who is constantly doing slapstick humor or very dry humor, but even that wasn't very funny. I did find the joke Thom Mathews made reference in the events of the first movie to be worth a chuckle though. Even the special effects this time around are a whole lot weaker and you could argue that's supposed to be part of the charm or joke in the movie, but I get the feeling it was simply budgetary and everything came out looking like Halloween store gags. some of the fight scenes went on a little too long, like really drawn up jokes and became less interest in as they But I did think the performances were pretty decent, especially Dana Ashbrook before his time as Bobby Briggs and whoever the main little kid was. clearly, it can't hold a torch to the first film but it was a decent attempt at trying to recreate the magic, but unfortunately it falls short. #nowwatching #nowplaying #returnofthelivingdeadpart2 #kenwiederhorn #danaashbrook #thommathews #jameskaren #marshadietlein #shoutfactory #screamfactory #lorimardistribution #horror #80shorror #comedy #zombies #bluray #bluraycollection #moviereview #filmreview #cinephile #1988 #goonreviewsreturnofthelivingdeadpart2
